In the 1990s, U.B.U.S. supported Black authors by publishing their literary works and provided distribution and wholesaling worldwide. Their services and bookstore served as a platform that was the catalyst for launching Black authors when mainstream publishers would not publish their works. U.B.U.S. published the only industry trade newspaper for Black books: 'Your Black Books Guide.' Because of his dedication to Black authors, Elder Khalifah is affectionately known as the "Father of Independent Black Publishing."
